Reiki Energy Therapy
A simple explanation.
Reiki - Universal Energy
Reiki is the modern name for an extremely ancient form of energy healing. Dr Mikao Usui, who originated the Reiki techniques, explored many texts in his studies and then passed on his knowledge and understanding to various students, who in turn passed this on to us in its present form. There is a great deal of ancient Buddhist learning and many teachings within this system and it is certain that we do not have the whole picture of the tradition outside of Japan.
Reiki works by channelling energy through the practitioner to the client. In this way the energy works to restore the client’s energy levels, thus helping them to restore normal energy flow and to regain health. You will notice that I say ‘channelling’. This is very different to Chi energy which is created by breathing exercises. In Reiki it is Universal Energy that is being drawn in from the world around us and then directed by the therapist towards the client.
Reiki is more of a spiritual technique which aims to create lasting change that is good for the client. In this way it differs from Chi energy which is normally directed at specific locations thought to have blockages. Reiki energy will flow to where it is needed, without any conscious instruction or thought from the therapist. In this way it is directed by the unconscious mind of the therapist, working collectively with the unconscious mind of the client in cooperation. There is a belief that the collective or universal unconscious is also playing a part to resolve the underlying and as yet undiscovered issues that initiated the illness in the first place.
Tera-Mai Reiki
There are many styles of Reiki in use in the West today. The original work of Dr Usui has been taken and added to, perhaps in some way complementing the original methods.
My personal view of this is that many of these new styles fit in with the mystical origins of the works that Dr Usui must have looked at and learned from. Perhaps those people have themselves realised that there was more to be understood and developed than was taught originally to those people that spread the style in the West.
The style I have learned and practice is the Tera Mei system as developed and taught by Kathleen Milner. This style has much in common with traditional shamanic work and I find it comfortable to use, which is a personal choice.
